Every Worldview Requires Faith

He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 NKJV

In my recent studies the coursework took me through arguments for and against the existence of God due to evil, and in another class we looked at different arguments for and against miracles. There is A LOT of material written through the millenia on these topics by learned men (sorry ladies, I did not see anything written by women except for the contemporary scientific research I used in my papers). And none of it is light or easy reading.

The conclusion I came to was that all positions require faith as their basis, whether agnostic, narrow and broad atheist and theist (there should be credit here to I think Rowe or Hume for these two categories, but I can’t remember which), secular humanism, etc. It is literally impossible to know or observe the beginning of all things. And that beginning is where the presuppositions are formed that we use to form and inform our worldviews. Granted, most people do not get that far back in understanding the root of their philosophical, ethical, and religious views but that is the core.

Habermas, Licona, Wright, and others have formed solid historical evidence authenticating the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, but what you do with this information is dependent on faith. The same for scientific research into the big bang, mathematically, physically and especially when considering the ‘something from nothing’ argument.

The verse quoted above from Ecclesiasties hits at the heart of the issue. We will never know with certainty whether God exist or whether random chance rules the galaxy due to some unknown scientific law as yet to be discovered. Personally, I think the end of Ecclesiasties is spot on.

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man’s all. For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil.

Ecclesiastes 12:13‭-‬14 NKJV

But why fear God?  Only fear God is you believe in an all-knowing, all-loving, all-powerful God.  Otherwise, why fear anything?

Because the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and although it cost all you have, seek understanding. (Proverbs 9:10, 4:7)

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”  (2 Timothy 1:7, NKJV)

Disjointed post, but it works….I hope.

This makes me think of the movie about Lee Stobel’s testimony, The Case for Christ. Have you seen it? He does all the research for two years to prove to his wife that God is not real, including interviewing people that believe, and people who don’t believe. And finally someone tells him that it takes faith to believe and faith to not believe, either way, and he has to choose. Pretty cool. Worth watching.
