You MUST Diversify Your Goals…

So it happened, I hit depression again this week as one job fell through and another is not looking so bright.  I started analyzing why it happened and quickly realized that as the deadline drew near for one of the positions I slowly started putting all of my non-career goals on hold.  So when the deadline came and passed without contact from the company, I started sinking.  They either don’t know if they have the contract yet or they are waiting to see which candidates made it through the vetting process with the government guys.  Either way, I have to be prepared for it to go both ways: in my favor or not in my favor.  How do you do that?

Set goals in seven different areas of your life and start working towards them, even if you have to cut them off once the job goes.

What are the seven ares?

Career – Physical Health – Family – Finances – Community/Social – Personal Development – Spiritual/Faith

And here is a link to a goal setting worksheet off of Dan Miller’s Site.

I promise that if you do this you will find yourself less irritable, more stable emotionally, better with your spouse and kids, a calmer driver, etc…  It seriously works.  You have to live a balanced life if  you want peace.  God wants you to be wise with your time, talent, skills, resources, abilities, etc…  Try setting goals that impact others in positive ways and see what happens.  It is liberating.

I concur. Goals and direction have been helpful in my life, too. It’s like riding a bike in that forward movement assists balance.

Loving your weblog. I wish i had a web-site and could write articles that will be informative but “to the point” as significantly as yours.

Makes a lot of sense–I agree! Definitely helps keep perspective while you are waiting.
